and with minimal cost.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>And while progressing from a herd manager, to share farmer and lessee, Red cattle have ensured he could keep a lid on health and reproduction expenses while delivering him plenty of replacements.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Incorporating Norwegian Reds into his breeding program during the past 25 years has also enabled the Meeniyan dairy farmer to capitalise on top-end genetics for his registered cattle and improve the quality of his cross-breds.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI first tried them as a three-way cross because my uncle was using them and they worked really well,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThey produced well, got in calf with no trouble and it snowballed from there.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The three and four-way crossing proved valuable, with the Norwegian Red genetics improving health and fertility traits of Paul\u2019s Jersey-Holstein animals and the resulting progeny delivering top-end production.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cIf I wasn\u2019t so much into my breeding, if I was more of an accountant or business analyst I would three-way crossbreed every day of the week,\u201d Paul said.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThree or four way crosses are usually the best animals.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Now, Paul\u00a0 milks more than 200 cows &#8211; of which up to 90 per cent are Reds &#8211; and has plans to grow his herd to 240.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>In recent years he\u2019s used a lot of REDX\u2122 &#8211; the sexed female Norwegian Red genetics.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s caused me a big problem &#8211; I have too many heifers,\u201d Paul joked.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been keeping them, building numbers, but it will allow me to cull harder in following seasons.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:list --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":4533,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure>\n<div style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.absglobal.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2023\/09\/Paul-Cocksege-2-rotated.jpg?w=768\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul on the farm with his Norwegian Reds<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><!-- wp:image {\"id\":4535,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure>\n<figcaption>The cull value of the Reds is something Paul also believes adds value to his business &#8211; with the Reds returning high carcass weights and yield percentages &#8211; but it&#8217;s their health and fertility traits that have really underpinned each Red animal\u2019s return on investment.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>A few years ago Paul analysed his business costs by breed.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>He said it was \u201cmind boggling\u201d how much cheaper his Red cows were, thanks to low cases of mastitis and lameness, compared to his Holsteins.<\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>It was a similar story for reproduction, the Reds used less semen to get in calf than the Holsteins, while on the labour-front, he doesn\u2019t have to check calving cows and seldom pulls calves.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>These cost savings have helped Paul build his herd &#8211; his primary asset &#8211; quickly and cost effectively.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>\u201cI believe I\u2019m getting a better return on investment,\u201d he said. \u201c I like the cows to work for me, rather than I work for the cows.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>An Australian Reds Director, Paul said the local industry\u2019s embrace of Norwegian Reds has improved the entire genetic pool.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>\u201cAs part of the Australian Red breed I think the Norwegian product is vital to the advancement of the Australian Red breed because it is a different line of genetics and a lot of leading herds have been using Norwegian Reds in varying amounts for a long time,\u201d he said.<br \/><br \/><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<figcaption>\u201cIn a lot of successful Australian bulls you will find Norwegian genetics in the background of their pedigrees.
